Typography is a very important part of web deisgn. typograpy presents deisgn and interfaces as a means of communication. by using different types of typography like bold fonts, big headlines that imporoves the look and feel of websites. In this articles we will discuss web typography in details.

About Elements of Typography

Typefaces and fonts: Actually typefaces are a family fonts like (such as Helvetica Regular, Helvetica Italic, Helvetica Black, and Helvetica Bold).

Typeface Classifications: The fonts are one wight or style within that family. these are large groupings of typefaces based on general classifications.

On a single Web pages, there are six types:

  • serif
  • sans-serif
  • monospaced
  • cursive
  • fantasy

Typeface Anatomy: typeface has different elements that recognise it from other typefaces. but you dpn’t need to go into it. actaully web designers don’t need to know the specifics of typeface anatomy. there are few elements you should be aware of are:

Cap and x-height: This is the height of the capital letters in the typeface and the height of the letter x. It tells you how tall the largest letters will be, and how big most lowercase letters will be.
Descender  and Ascenders : These are the portions of letters that go below and above the x-height line. These typically refer to lowercase letters.

Few More Typography Elements

There are many other things that should keep in mind when creating a good typographic system…

Use of Hyphenation: it is the addition of a hyphen (-) at the end of lines to increase readability or make look better. Most Web designers ignore hyphenation, as it is not something that is handled well automatically by Web browsers.

Use Widows and Orphans: A single word at the end of a column is a widow and if it’s at the top of a new column it’s an orphan. Widows and orphans look bad and can be hard to read.
